Successful direct contact with Istituto Comprensivo Statale "E. Fermi - A. Oggioni" in Villasanta, Italy

16 September, 2013 at 08.04 UTC, 10.04 local time, Istituto Comprensivo Statale "E. Fermi - A. Oggioni" in Villasanta, Italy established a direct contact with ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano KF5KDP, onboard the  International Space Station.

The Fermi-Oggioni Middle School is located in the centre of Villasanta, near Monza (Milano). There are 403 students and 43 teachers. One class (25 students) is involved in the project named "Space to Space". These students are thirteen years old and they are attending the third and final year of middle school.

Gianpietro Ferrario IZ2GOJ, ARISS mentor and radio contact coordinator, managed for a direct contact from the school in Villasanta, assisted by the ARISS Lombardia team. The questions were read by students at school. More than 100 students, parents, visitors and media attended he event (indirect attendance about 300).

The contact was established by IZ2GOJ in Villasanta. ARISS telebridge station IK1SLD in Casale Monferrato was connected per phone line with the school, ready to take over the radio link in case of problem. Contact was established with IRØISS at 08.04 UTC, 10.04 local time. Immediately after AOS, astronaut Luca Parmitano switched to backup channel following some noise heard onboard. Luca Parmitano answered 15 questions, and exchanged greetings with the school administrator before LOS. Signals from the ISS were loud and clear during most of the pass.

Tuesday September 24, ARISS contact scheduled with school in Cesano Maderno, Italy

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Scuola Media Statale “Salvo D’Acquisto”, Cesano Maderno, Italy The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:18 UTC, which is 12:18 CEST.

The contact will be a telebridge operated by VK5ZAI, located in Kingston, southern Australia.

The event will be webcast on http://www.livestream.com/amsat_italia

The contact will be broadcast on EchoLink AMSAT (node 101 377) and JK1ZRW (node 277 208) Conference servers, as well as on IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010.

Salvo D’Acquisto Middle School is located in the centre of Cesano Maderno, not far from Monza (Milano). The school counts 558 students and 59 teachers. A class of 26 students will be involved in the project. These thirteen years old  students are attending the third and final year of middle school.

The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian by astronaut Luca Parmitano KF5KDP.

Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:

6. Ylenia: Nel tempo libero, come vi svagate?
7. Federico: Visto che sei stato assegnato alla missione nel 2011, aspettavi con ansia questo momento oppure eri tranquillo?
8. Stefano: Cosa vedi se guardi fuori dalla Stazione Spaziale in questo momento?
9. Erica: Cosa mangi a bordo della Stazione Spaziale?
10. Mattia: Come ti senti ad essere il primo astronauta italiano impegnato in attivita' extraveicolari?
11. Viktoria: Le stelle si vedono 24 ore su 24 nello spazio?
12. Lorenzo: Per mezzo di che cosa si muove la Stazione Spaziale?
13. Alessandra: Ad oggi hai mai visto niente di strano volare nello spazio?
14. Andrea: E' bello osservare la Terra dallo spazio?
15. Marta: Hai gia' notato qualche cambiamento nel suo corpo, da quando sei a bordo della ISS?
16. Rehnuma: Quale e' il fine scientifico della missione Volare?
17. Rebecca: Quanto tempo passerai a bordo della ISS?
18. Teilor:  Nello spazio le ore di sonno e quelle di attivita' restano invariate rispetto a quelle terrestri o cambiano?
19. Sofia: Avrai intenzione, successivamente, di ritornare nello spazio?
20. Soufiane: Hai dei piani di emergenza in caso di problemi nello spazio, nella partenza e nel ritorno?

ARISS is an international educational outreach program partnering the participating space agencies, NASA, Russian Space Agency, ESA, CNES, JAXA, and CSA, with the AMSAT and IARU organizations from participating countries.

ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers onboard the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology and learning.
